ABSTRACT

The retail industry is a large service platform where national and international manufacturers bring their products to consumers. Today, the retail sector, both bricks-and-mortar and online, is developing and adapting to the changing needs of the customers. Depending on the changing demand patterns of the customers, one can notice that key success criteria of the sector transform as well. Rapid adaptation to changing requirements of the retail sector is necessary in order to survive in the increased competition and to increase the market share among the other companies. In order to analyze the sector in Turkey, retail brands that are selected from the largest 500 companies of Turkey (Capital 500 list) were examined using the relevant success criteria. Key success factors have been chosen from the existing literature about the retail sector. Firstly, retailing was examined in a theoretical framework to better undersand the elements that define the sector alongside technological capabilities of the sector. Additionally the effects of Covid-19 on e-retailing were also evaluated with the purpose of determining the changes forced upon the sector by the pandemic. In the light of the findings, the emerging companies, observed changes and directional shifts, and the size of the competition in Turkish retailing sector are discussed. Success criteria were chosen from the existing literature, and were weighted in accordance with importance ranks obtained through content analysis. Considering success criteria, DEA analysis has been carried out and the efficiency level of the companies has been evaluated. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The retail sector is experiencing unprecedented volatility, uncertainty and ambiguity, and these culminated in the closure of some of its notable giants due to the global financial crisis and the novel corona virus pandemic. This paper uses Organisational Mindfulness (OM) and Resource Based View (RBV) to investigate the adoption of data analytics in developing countries using data from Zimbabwe's retail sector. The results showed that while some industries use big data analytics (BDA), its adoption remains an insurmountable task for some Zimbabwean retailers due to infrastructural, resource and other technical challenges. It revealed that successful adoption of BDA in the retail sector can help change business operations, including the ability to match customer expectations, hone product lines and improve marketing campaigns. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Pandemic COVID-19 struck numerous regions of the planet in the first few months of 2020. India and other emerging nations in particular saw negative growth over a few quarters of the previous fiscal year. With a contribution of over 10%, retailing is one of the major industries that contribute to India's GDP. As a result, the retail industry must recover, which may be done with the effective application of new digital technology. Here, association rules that may be utilised to create discounts and package deals are extracted using market basket analysis. Additionally, similar guidelines may be applied to determine where to arrange a product in a retail setting. Items purchased in bulk can be arranged adjacent to one another to improve sales. To suggest the products that consumers should buy, recommendation algorithms are most frequently employed in e-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart, etc. and streaming platforms like Netflix. Although there are numerous online and mobile apps that use recommendation engines, physical retail businesses have not yet adopted them owing to the various consequences they have, such as infrastructure, cost, etc. In this project, we've used market basket research and recommendation algorithms to develop a model that can be used in retail establishments to boost sales and improve customer satisfaction. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The retail industry contributes to the United States economy, and high turnover rates reduce the profitability of businesses, which affects their sustainability. The general problem is millennials employed in retail are not finding adequate leadership support and alignment with their career expectations or social beliefs. This qualitative single case study involved an embedded group of millennials employed as retail managers with at least three years of supervisory experience. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences and expectations involving effective leadership. The study involved using the generational theory, cognitive model of behavior, and servant leadership theory to address how perceptions of leadership are influenced by generational differences and leader behavior. Data collection from 8 semi-structured interviews was affected by the shared societal event of the COVID pandemic. Thematic analysis revealed transitional data from a follower's perspective to a leader's perspective and an emerging millennial leadership style. Millennials' skills and behaviors have evolved from life experiences and they can relate to other generations because of a need to know everything with a fearlessness to ask why. Future research of retail leadership will provide guidance to managers in the retail industry as they determine the style of leadership that fits their environment, culture, and employee needs. Reducing the voluntary turnover rate by putting people before profit in the retail industry will decrease the ripple effect that business closures have on local, state, and federal government sustainability. ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reshaped consumers' grocery shopping behavior. Meanwhile, change in consumer shopping behavior might further exert a considerable and far-reaching impact on the food retail industry. Although the existing literature provides investigation on the impact of the pandemic on the retail industry, very few studies discuss the impact of changes in consumer shopping behavior on the stock market performance of the retail industry. This paper investigates selected food retailers listed in China's stock market. To overcome the problems of the Chow test, the Quandt-Andrews test was used to identify the dates of breakpoints of structural change in the stock price performance of those selected companies. The results suggest that there has indeed been an industry-wide structural change in the stock market performance during the pandemic. The study found that the dates of breakpoints for the selected companies were concentrated in the first half of 2020, when China was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic the most. Our survey shows that under strict epidemic prevention and control measures, consumers have gradually adapted to the new normal of epidemic prevention to a certain extent, established safety awareness, and changed their consumption behavior. Our study on stock price data implies that Chinese consumers experienced a shift from physical store offline purchases to online purchasing model.

ABSTRACT

Modern retail business manages products from various sources to serve consumers. To be able to respond to customers' needs, accurate sales forecasting is essential to prepare appropriate levels of stocks. This research aims to find methods and features to forecast the daily sales for a case study retail store chain having many categories of products with varied promotion prices. Three main models are considered: (1) Time series forecasting, i.e., TBATS model, (2) explanatory forecasting method, i.e., multiple linear regression, and (3) machine learning model, i.e., XGBoost. Different types of dependent and independent variables transformation in Stepwise regression are also considered in order to find the most accurate results. Since there were records of the number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand from 2020 and there was also government's welfare money policy during Covid-19 crisis, this paper attempts to find how these variables affects retail sales. Weighted absolute percentage error (WAPE) is used to compare the accuracy among different models. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has shocked the retail industry, customers’ concerns for their health and safety are taking business away from shopping malls. Mall owners are thinking of finding new ways to bring their business back in this post-pandemic world. How to protect customers from COVID-19 in shopping malls has been a problem. This study presents an enhanced mall security system to help enforce wearing masks and proper social distancing in shopping malls using augmented reality (AR). We created a novel visualization way: Radar vision to display detected people in the perspective of mall guards, to help guards react quickly to violations, and better enforce the mandatory rules. When the mall guards wearing hololens activate the radar vision function, they can see all people violating wearing masks or social distance mandates through the wall. Mall guards can use gaze to select the target person and then use the voice command to activate the navigation arrow to help them quickly go to the scene. In addition to helping mall guards to enforce mandates, the system also provides assisted functions to protect customers. When the violation situation appears around a customer, the system will alert them to avoid and show an avoidance arrow until the user goes in the correct direction. We demonstrated a preliminary system with four surveillance cameras in our school building area. The pilot study shows that our system can effectively detect and display radar images, increasing the efficiency of mall guards and reducing customer safety concerns. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Global-SCM (Global-supply-chain-management) is characterised as the distribution of goods and services to maximise profit and reduce waste within the global network of a transnational business. The goal of this chapter is to provide information on the challenges faced by global supply chain management as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and to suggest solutions to these challenges through machine learning and artificial intelligence. The work presented in this research constitutes a contribution to modelling and forecasting the demand in a retail sales company, by using time series approach. Our work shows how the historical data of retail items could be utilized to forecast future demands and how these forecasts affect the supply chain management. The historical demand information was used for forecasting future demands using several autoregressive integrated moving average models like AR, MA, ARMA, ARIMA, and SARIMA. By comparing their Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) values we get to know that ARIMA model is best suited for demand forecasting of the current retail item sale data. The result from the proposed work so obtained proves that the proposed model could be utilized for demand forecasting to meet the future demands in the retail sales item company. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

Ayrıca alışveriş merkezlerinde görülen hasta bina sendromu belirtilerinin çalışanların stres seviyelerini yükselttiği tespit edilmiştir (F: 55.769, p: 0.00).Alternate :Sick building syndrome, which expressed as a series of common symptoms that are seen more frequently than expected by the residents or employees of a building, which are associated with the building, such as skin, respiratory system complaints, headache, fatigue, and concentration impairment, which cause discomfort in the person. The emergence of sick building syndrome symptoms causes psycho-social risk factors such as anxiety and stress as well as ergonomic risk factors. The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between sick building syndrome symptoms and stress and to draw attention to the symptoms that may be seen in those who stay in closed area for a long time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, with the general quarantine declaration initiated by the World Health Organization with the slogan of "stay at home" due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of these symptoms, which may occur in those living in closed area for a long time, will increase the stress as well as the global fear and anxiety affecting all individuals. The results of the research conducted with 259 shopping mall employees;it is understood that employees have symptoms of dry throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, and general muscle-joint pain, which are indicators similar to Covid-19 symptoms. In addition, it has been found that the symptoms of sick building syndrome seen in shopping malls increase the stress levels of employees (F: 55.769, p: 0.00).
